First before I go into the details of all the exciting things that were learnt during the workshop, I must tell you all how it came about. I have always wanted to teach people how to braid and for the longest time (I think over a year) I had been boring my customers with the talk of “I think it would be so great to do a workshop and just teach people to learn how to braid hair”. Despite every single person I talked to agreeing, I still did not know how or when would be the right time to do something like that. There have not been and had not been anything in terms of workshops done like that before in any place I have lived. That was until I was invited to a painting workshop during my two months of working up in Stewart BC the summer of 2022. Now I had attended a very artsy-fartsy school all throughout high school and still felt like no Picasso. I often say my stick figure drawings would make my high school art teacher disappointed at my skills haha. When I walked out of that pain shop with my painting I had just completed with step-by-step coaching directions from the professional, I felt like I could paint. I just needed some in-person coaching! So when the opportunity to fundraise came about in my bible study I thought it would be a good thing to do as it teaches people skills and they are able to take home and practice.
In every session that I had people requested that I should do MORE of these braiding workshops and I was absolutely amazed that everyone had such a great time. I would like to share with you all some highlights from those who attended the workshop:).
February 2023 Highlights
Hair Braiding workshop
Georgia
Attended the second session from 1:00pm to 4:00pm and here is what she had to say…
This is absolutely amazing. I wish I had learned this during my hairdressing program. You should consider hosting a full day workshop over at the hairdressing school.
Briana Attended the first session from 09:00am to 12:00pm and here is what she had to say… "This was such a fun and amazing workshop!! I loved every minute of it. Would definitely be up for more workshops in the future."
When asked in a survey post workshop 100% of the participants said they had learned new skills that they will keep on working on at home. The most exciting parts of the workshop for me was when braiders would make one braid and be discouraged that its not neat, perfect or strong enough, but then they'd make a second braid and be so excited at HOW MUCH BETTER that braid was than the first. Progress happens that fast when it comes to braiding.
MANY of the participants in the braiding workshop suggested that I should do more of these hair braiding workshops. So to that I say heck yeah! the question I have for you is would you be interested in attending the next hair braiding workshops? Let me know in the comments below. If you are interested in pre-signing up for upcoming workshops or just being on the list of individuals to be first notified, feel free to fill out the sign up sheet
What is Black History Month all about?
Black History Month is an annual celebration of the achievements and contributions made by African Americans throughout history. It's an important reminder to recognize and honour the history, culture and accomplishments of African Americans, who have been essential to the growth and progress of our nation. From influential figures like Harriet Tubman and Martin Luther King Jr., to everyday heroes who have made a difference in their communities, Black History Month is an opportunity to recognize the vital role African Americans have played and continue to play in our society.
The Story of Madam CJ walker
Madam CJ Walker was an African-American entrepreneur, philanthropist, and civil rights activist. She was born in 1867 in Delta, Louisiana, and was the first female self-made millionaire in the United States. She was orphaned at the age of seven and started out as a washerwoman before creating a line of hair care products for African-American women. In 1905, she established the Madam CJ Walker Manufacturing Company and employed thousands of people.
Walker used her wealth to support her charitable causes, including the NAACP, YMCA, and the National Association of Colored Women. She also mentored many other black entrepreneurs and was a strong advocate for women's rights. Her legacy is a powerful example of hard work, determination, and ambition.
If you haven’t already go and watch a recreation of her life on a Netflix documentary called madam CJ walker

4 things to know when embarking on a healthy hair journey
1.Your Hair Type
Why it is important?
Your hair type is important because it will determine:
The products that work best for your hair to grow
How often you should moisturize your hair
Other hairstyling techniques that may work better for your hair type.
Do you know what yours hair type is?
When it comes to hair care, knowing your hair type is crucial. This knowledge can help you choose the right products and techniques to keep your locks healthy and beautiful. Hair types are typically classified into four categories: straight, wavy, curly, and coily. Straight hair is typically smooth and shiny, while wavy hair has loose, flowing waves. Curly hair has tighter curls that form ringlets, and coily hair has very tight curls or coils that are prone to dryness and breakage. Once you know your hair type, you can tailor your hair care routine to meet its unique needs, such as using moisturizing products for coily hair or avoiding heavy styling products that can weigh down straight hair. So take the time to figure out your hair type, and give your hair the care it deserves!
2. Your Hair porosity
Hair porosity is the hair's ability to absorb and retain moisture. It is determined by the hair's cuticle, which is the outermost layer of the hair shaft. If the cuticle is tightly packed and flat, the hair is considered to have low porosity, which means that it does not easily absorb moisture. On the other hand, if the cuticle is raised and open, the hair is considered to have high porosity, which means that it absorbs moisture easily but also loses it quickly. Understanding your hair's porosity is important in determining the right hair care routine and products to use.
How to test which hair type you are with a simple hair porosity test.
Method #1.)
• Take a strand of hair and place it in a bowl of water and wait 15 minutes. If it sinks quickly, your hair has high porosity. If it floats on top, your hair has low porosity. If it sinks slowly, your hair has normal porosity.
Methode #2.)
• Feel the texture of your hair. High porosity hair often feels rough and dry, while low porosity hair feels smooth and shiny.
3. Hair products
One of the most important factors to consider when selecting hair products is our hair type. Hair type is determined by the texture, thickness, and curl pattern of our hair. Using the wrong hair products can lead to a variety of problems such as dryness, breakage, and frizz. Therefore, it is important to use hair products that are specifically designed for our hair type.
For those with straight hair, lightweight shampoos and conditioners are recommended to avoid weighing the hair down. People with wavy hair can benefit from products that enhance the natural waves. Those with curly hair should use products that provide extra moisture to combat frizz and keep curls defined. Finally, for those with coily hair, products that provide intense moisture and define curls are the best choice.
Choosing hair products based on hair type is an important step in maintaining healthy, shiny, and beautiful hair. By selecting the right products, we can achieve the desired look and feel for our hair.
4. Hair Product Application
After washing and conditioning your hair, gently dry your hair using 100% cotton material until it's damp. Then, apply a small amount of hair product to your hair. The amount you apply will depend on the length and thickness of your hair, as well as the type of product you're using.
Methods of hair products applications
LOC: aka Liquid (usually water) sprayed on, Oil applied, Cream applied. With this methode, you may experience excess dry hair even when you are using hair products consistently. This is becuase that extra layer of moisturizer (the cream) is added on after the hair shafts have been sealed off with oil. Oil makes it impossible for any water-based cream to get to the hair shaft when hair products are applied in this manner.
LCO: Liquid, Cream, Oil application. personally I preferer this method as oil is a sealant, so when it is applied last, we ensure that the moisturizing of hair will be impactful in absorbing into the hair shaft and effective at limiting hair breakage
Other Hair Products
For styling products, such as mousse or gel, start by applying a small amount to your roots and working it through your hair with your fingers. For leave-in treatments, such as serums or oils, apply a small amount to the ends of your hair and work your way up towards the roots. Be sure to evenly distribute the product throughout your hair to avoid any clumps or patches. You can use a comb or brush to help spread the product evenly.
Longevity and application
Once the product is applied, style your hair as desired. Remember to always read the instructions on the product packaging for specific application instructions and recommended usage. we don't do this enough!!
I hope this helped! Let me know if you have any questions. Once again its your girl Teya, just out here helping you thrive in your hair journey as you enjoy life in hairstyles you love!
